Securely set up your Ledger hardware wallet and Ledger Live in a few clear steps. This page walks you through initialization, backup, app installation and best practices.
Inspect the packaging and accessories. Only use Ledger Live from ledger.com/start or the official app stores. If packaging appears tampered, contact Ledger support.
Install Ledger Live on your computer or mobile device. Ledger Live is the companion app to manage accounts, install blockchain apps and transact securely.
Choose Set up as new. Create a PIN directly on the device. The device will then display a recovery phrase — write the words down in order on the provided recovery sheet.
The device will ask you to confirm a few words. This verifies your backup. Never store the recovery phrase digitally or share it with anyone — Ledger staff will never ask for it.
Open Ledger Live Manager to install blockchain apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Then add accounts to view balances and receive funds; private keys remain secure on the device.
When sending funds, always verify the recipient address on the device screen before confirming. This prevents malware on your computer from tampering with addresses.
If your device is lost, stolen or damaged, you can restore accounts on a new compatible device using your recovery phrase. If Ledger Live fails to detect the device, try a different cable/port, reboot, or reinstall Ledger Live. For persistent issues, contact Ledger Support.
